Steps to grow Lavender from seeds
Lavender is somewhat challenging to grow from seed, and the seeds take up to a month to germinate. However, follow the below steps to get a successful bloom.
1. Choose the Right Seeds
In India English lavender is most commonly grown from seed as it is easy to maintain when grown in the right conditions.
2. Get the Timing Right
Lavender seeds need time to sprout, so start the process indoors for 10-12 weeks.
The best time to start with Lavender seeds is in the month of September or October.
3. Prepare the Seeds (Stratification)
Lavender seeds most importantly need 20 to 30 days of cold stratification.
Steps of Stratification:
- Firstly, place the seeds in small tissue paper.
- Moist the tissue paper then keep in zip lock.
- Close the bag and keep it in the fridge for 20-30 days
This process mimics winter conditions and improves germination rates.
4. Sow the seedsÂ
After 20-30 days, it’s time to sow the seeds. Follow these steps:
- Use seed-starting trays or small pots with well-draining soil or seed-starting mix.
- You can add some gravel to the soil to make sure it has good drainage. Sandy soil can be a good option for growing Lavender too.
- Moisten the soil before planting.
- Sprinkle the seeds on the surface and gently press them down without covering them completely.
- Lavender seeds need light to germinate.
5. Provide the Right Conditions
- Light: Lavender plants love the sun and need 6-8 hours of direct light daily. Choose a sunny spot in the garden.
- Temperature: Keep the temperature around 18-24°C for the seeds to germinate.
- Moisture: Keep the soil slightly moist but not soggy. Just stick your finger in the soil about an inch deep – if it’s dry, water it.
6. Be Patient (Germination Takes Time)
Lavender seeds can take 2-4 weeks (sometimes longer) to sprout. Don’t give up if they don’t show signs of growth immediately.
7. Transplant the Seedlings
Once the seedlings have grown two sets of true leaves and are a few inches tall, they are ready to be transplanted.
Choose a sunny spot in your garden with well-draining soil after that transplant them.
8. Further Planting in the Garden
- Dig holes slightly larger than the root ball of each seedling.
- Basically, Space the plants about 12-18 inches apart to allow good airflow.
- Gently place the seedlings in the holes and cover the roots with soil.
- Water lightly after planting. However, do not overwater, it will rot the roots.
9. Caring for Your Lavender Plants
- Lavender Seeds Watering: Lavender prefers dry conditions, so water only when the soil is dry.
- Pruning: Trim the plants in early spring to encourage bushy growth.
