First, choose a high-quality seed-starting mix that will drain but still have the right amount of moisture levels to germinate. Fill the small trays or pots with the mix level to the top and press on top to level off.

Dianthus seed germination is optimal at 65-70°F (18-21°C). Give them heat and moisture by covering them with a plastic dome or plastic wrap. Put them in a bright spot with in direct light or under a grow light, if necessary. Give them good air circulation to avoid mold and fungus issues.

Germination will generally be 7-14 days. Once seedlings are up, provide light for improved air circulation. Water soil often but not waterlogged. Provide light to allow proper growth. When seedlings become leggy, move to a better-lit position.

When seedlings have two or three sets of true leaves, transplant them. Handle them carefully and transplant them into bigger pots or directly into the garden bed. Choose a well-draining location with plenty of sunlight. Plant flowers 6-12 inches apart for proper air  and to prevent disease.

Dianthus requires slightly alkaline to neutral ground. Water moderately but not too much, since excess wetness will have a tendency to cause root rot. Feed with slow-release balanced fertilizer for optimum development and for future blooming. Deadhead regularly to encourage constant flowering.
