Antirrhinum ‘Madame Butterfly’ is a beautiful snapdragon type that flowers with double, ruffled blooms. They are a gardener’s delight to the eye and are also a bee and butterfly magnet. They are easy and rewarding to grow from seed.

Start by selecting a quality seed-starting material. Sow the medium into small pots or seed trays and pack the top surface firm to create an even layer. Water the ground lightly so that seeds can settle in it.

Sow the tiny seeds on the surface of the soil but not covered. Antirrhinum seeds need light for germination, so press them down gently without covering them. Water the soil lightly to maintain moisture. Dianthus Double can be a good companion

For best germination, keep the temperature at 65-75°F (18-24°C). Use trays with a plastic lid or plastic wrap for humidity. Place them in a light spot with indirect illumination or grow light. Allow circulation of air not to be hindered to prevent the development of mold or fungus.

The seeds will germinate after 10-14 days. After they have, take off the cover and put them in light. Water the soil but not excessively. If the seedlings do start to stretch, move them to a brighter spot.

Hence Transplant seedlings at two or three true leaves old. Pot them on in bigger pots or directly into garden beds. Plant them where there is lots of sun but good drainage. Space 8-12 inches between specimens to allow for good air circulation.

Watering: Water weekly but not excessively so the soil does not become waterlogged. Fertilize with a balanced fertilizer every fortnight to enhance healthy growth. Also Remove old flowers by deadheading to preserve the flowers. Support young plants from wind as they have weak, long stems.
