Germinate February to April at 20-30C (68-86F) on the surface of a good free draining, damp seed compost. Apply a layer of compost, 1.5mm (1/16in) deep. Place in a propagator or seal container inside a polythene bag until after germination which usually takes 7-14 days. Do not exclude light at any stage, as this helps germination. Can also be sown direct outdoors in May.
Transplant seedlings when large enough to handle into 7.5cm (3in) pots. Grow on in cooler, well lit conditions. When well grown, acclimatise to outdoor conditions before planting out after all risk of frost, 90cm (3ft) apart.
Starting
Just cover the small seeds very lightly with soil. Aim to space plants 15-23cm (6-9″) apart.
Growing
Grow in rich, well drained soil with a pH range of 6.0-7.5. Water established plants only during dry spells. Cut back the short stems after flowering, and be sure to mulch if very cold weather is expected. Replenish with new seeds every 3-4 years.
