How to Sow Echinacea ‘Cheyenne Spirit’ Seeds (Cold Stratification Tutorial)
Echinacea ‘Cheyenne Spirit’ is a gorgeous perennial bloom that has richly colored shades such as red, orange, yellow, pink, and white. It is easy to plant, long-lasting, and bee- and butterfly-friendly. The plant is dry-resistant and ideal for flower gardens, flower beds, and wildflower gardens.
Echinacea seeds slowly germinate, particularly because they are cold stratified first before ideal germination. Cold stratification is winter simulation that is a method by which seeds germinate.

How to Seed (Cold Stratification Required)
Step 1: Cold Stratification (Pre-Seeding)
- Echinacea Cheyenne Soak Paper Towel: Wet paper towel but no drip.
- Add Seeds: Put Echinacea seeds on a wet paper towel.
- Seal & Keep: Place seeds on a towel, and seal them in a container or plastic bag.
- Refrigerate: Store in refrigerator for 4–6 weeks (35–40°F / 1–4°C).
- Weekly Check: Dip towel a little wet, but no drip.
Step 2: Sowing the Seeds
- Indoors (Best If Begun Early)
- Echinacea Cheyenne Time: Sow seeds 8–10 weeks prior to the last frost.
- Soil: Sow in well-draining compost for light-textured seeds.
- Planting: Sow seeds on the surface and top with a very thin layer of compost.
- Water: Water compost as usual but never waterlogged.
- Light & Heat: Remain in light position at 65–70°F (18–21°C).
- Sprouting: Seeds will be 10–20 days shy of germinating when given cold treatment.
- Repotting: Repot seedlings outdoors after the danger of frost has passed.
Outdoor (Fall or Early Spring Direct Sowing)
- Fall Planting: Sow seeds in the ground during winter to naturally stratify.
- Spring Planting: Use the fridge method and later plant in warm soil.
- Spacing: 12–18 inches (30–45 cm) apart.
