Zinnia cactus is a beautiful flower with curly, pointed petals that give a unique, prickly look. The strong flowers are a favorite of pollinators and add color to any garden. They are easy and rewarding to cultivate from seeds. Just follow these steps for gorgeous zinnias year-round.

For optimal performance, sow zinnia cactus seeds in late spring after the last frost. Zinnias are heat-resistant, but plant them only after the soil temperature has reached at least 70°F (21°C). Zinnias prefer fertile well-drained soil. To start, select a position that is exposed to full sun since this will reduce flowering. Second, dig in the ground by raking and incorporating compost to increase fertility. Do not use heavy clay ground as it is too wet and causes root rot.

Finally, sow the seeds. Sow them on the surface of the soil and cover them with a very thin layer of soil, ¼ inch deep. Firm them into the soil and water lightly and keep them moist. Sow them in seed trays of potting soil that drain when grown indoors.

The seeds would have germinated in seven to five days. Water soil as usual but not overwatered for the period. Thin seedlings when they grow two sets of leaves and provide them with 12 to 18 inches of space from each other. The latter spacing provides good air and disease cover.

Zinnias needs very little care after transplanting. Water them once a week to the depth of the soil and allow it to dry out before watering again. Avoid watering overhead to prevent fungal infection. Fertilize also with a balanced fertilizer every three or four weeks to give them strong growth and more flowers.

To lengthen the flower period, deadhead frequently by removing spent blooms. By deadheading in this way, plants will produce more flowers.

Zinnias are pest-resistant but may develop spider mites and aphids. They can be easily washed with water or insecticidal soap if they become infested. Fungal disease such as powdery mildew is prevented by giving them proper spacing and well-drained soil.

It is easy and rewarding to grow zinnia cactus from seed. Spiky, colored blooms all summer are a possibility with a little drainage, minimal watering, and deadheading as necessary. Zinnias bring splashes of color and beauty to flower beds or containers.
