Melocactus Bahiensis requires direct sun, warm spots. Place it where it receives a minimum of six hours of direct sun daily. If planted indoors, place it in front of a sunny window or near a grow light. The cactus will survive and become misshapen if it is not provided with a sufficient quantity of light.

This cactus prefers well-draining soil, too, to avoid root rot. Melocactus Bahiensis Plant in a cactus potting mix or blend your own using perlite, sand, and potting mix. Plant in a pot with drainage holes so water will seep out. Plant in terracotta pots because they store water and dry out the roots.

Good watering is the largest part of tending your Melocactus to keep it healthy. Water generously but conservatively when the soil feels as dry as a bone. Melocactus Bahiensis prefers warm temperatures between 70°F to 90°F (21°C to 32°C). Melo is not hardy to frost and should not be placed outside in frost. Below 50°F (10°C), bring the plant indoors or cover with a cloth. The cactus also prefers moderate humidity but can withstand dry air.

Feed your Melocactus with a balanced cactus fertilizer at half strength every month when your Melocactus is growing. Fertilizing during winter months is not advisable since that is when your Melocactus is dormant and does not require additional nutrients.
