Mammillaria prolifera or Texas Nipple Cactus is a low-maintenance cactus with yellow flowers and short spines. It is simple to care for and ideal for newbies.

The cactus prefers bright, indirect light. A south window or place that receives six or more hours of sunlight would be perfect. When growing outside, select a partially shaded location in not to burn.

Water sparingly, allowing the soil to dry out fully between waterings. Water fortnightly in spring and summer (growing season). Reduce to monthly or cease during winter to avoid rot.

Drainage is essential. Plant in a cactus potting soil or make your own blend using potting soil, sand, and perlite. A pot with holes will prevent waterlogging.

Mammillaria prolifera likes warm temperatures of 65–80°F (18–27°C). It can take short cold spells but needs to be over 50°F (10°C). It likes low-humidity, so do not give it a humid location.

Feed once a month with a dilute cactus plant food when the plant is in growth. Don’t feed during the fall and winter when the plant is dormant.

Repoting: Repot every two or three years, or when the cactus has outgrown the pot it is in. Repot using fresh, well-draining potting soil, taking care not to damage the sensitive roots.

Mammillaria Prolifera This cactus has small offsets which can be carefully taken off and planted. Dry out the offsets a day before planting in dry potting soil. Water sparingly after rooting.

Mammillaria prolifera is pest-free, but now and then has visits from spider mites or mealybugs. They get neem oil or insecticidal soap applied to them. Root rot from overwatering is the primary problem.
