Iris flower bulbs add a touch of elegance and beauty to every kind of garden. They are also available in numerous colors of varieties and are very easy to grow. While some of the iris plants grow from rhizomes, others of their gorgeous variety grow from bulbs. If you care for them well, you can quite easily grow irises from bulbs in your garden.

Start with healthy iris bulbs. Choose tight, firm bulbs with no evidence of mold or damage. The larger the bulb, the healthier the plant and the more vibrant the flowers.

It is better to sow iris bulbs during autumn from the period September to November. It would provide them space to start taking root in advance so that when winter sets in, they will be settled well. If you are in a warm place, sow late autumn so that they will perform their best.

Iris flower bulbs prefer well-drained soil to thrive. Combine garden soil, compost, and sand to enhance drainage. Soften hard-packed soil if planting in it. Slightly acidic to neutral soil pH will be optimal for irises.

Bury holes 4 to 6 inches deep. Place bulbs in the holes so the pointed end will be facing upwards and have 3 to 4 inches soil space between them. Fill holes with the soil and gently tap it down so that the bulbs will stay. Water lightly.

Iris bulbs adore lots of sunlight. Give them at least 6 hours a day of direct sunlight and they’ll be happy as clams. In extremely hot climates, give them after-sun to provide shade so as not to cause stress through heat overdose.

Iris flower bulbs. Water the bulbs after planting. Keep soil slightly moist, but not soggy. Water only when the topsoil feels dry after they have started to grow. Feed with a balanced fertilizer monthly for strong roots and vibrant flowers. Adenium Obesum can be a good companion

Watch for snails and aphids and spray them with organic pesticides or neem oil to drive them away. Give the plants good air movement to avoid fungal infections.

Iris flowers bloom during spring and remain for a few weeks. Once wilted, cut the flower stalks but not the leaves. This will avoid bulbs storing energy for next year. Remove yellow leaves and store the bulbs in a cold, dry location when leaves become yellow.
