Godetia, often referred to as “Clarkia” (its old botanical name), is a beautiful flowering plant known for its vibrant blooms. Here’s a guide to growing Godetia from seed:
1. Selecting Seeds
- Choose Quality Seeds: Purchase seeds from a reputable supplier. Godetia seeds are usually available in various colors, including pink, red, and white.
2. When to Plant
- Indoor Sowing: Start seeds indoors 6-8 weeks before the last expected frost. This gives the plants a head start.
- Outdoor Sowing: Direct sow outdoors after the danger of frost has passed and the soil has warmed up, typically in late spring or early summer.
3. Preparing the Soil
- Soil Type: Godetias prefer well-drained soil. Amend the soil with compost to improve fertility and drainage.
- pH: Aim for a slightly acidic to neutral soil pH (6.0-7.0).
4. Sowing Seeds
- Indoor Sowing: Fill seed trays or pots with a seed-starting mix. Sow seeds on the surface and lightly press them into the soil, but do not cover them with soil.
- Outdoor Sowing: Scatter seeds on the soil surface and lightly rake to ensure good seed-to-soil contact. Cover with a thin layer of soil if needed.
5. Germination Conditions
- Light: Godetia seeds require light to germinate, so do not cover them with too much soil.
- Temperature: Maintain a soil temperature of 60-70°F (15-21°C) for optimal germination.
- Moisture: Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. Use a misting bottle if sowing indoors to keep the surface moist.
