Flax Ornamental Mix (Linum perenne) is a beautiful perennial whose lacy, delicate, multicolor flowers float in the breeze. Flax Ornamental Mix seeds should be planted in early spring following the final frost. However, in an area where you are in a relatively warm climate, go ahead and plant them in the fall season too. Flax will do very well if the weather is cool, and thus an early planting gives it a very good head start.

The plant likes to have sandy or loamy soil that will drain well. Number one, pick a spot that receives full sun. Number two, spade over the ground and destroy weeds with a spading fork. If your ground is heavy clay, incorporate sand or compost so it will drain. This keeps water from standing around roots.

Now plant the seeds. Plant them in a straight line on prepared ground. Press them in but don’t bury them so deeply.  flax seeds need light to germinate, so a light surface layer of soil will be adequate. Water lightly to wet it. Achillea Filipendulina shares the same weather conditions.

You will notice small seedlings in two or three weeks. Keep soil moist but not wet during this period. Thin the seedlings when they reach two or three sets of leaves, giving enough room for their growth. Space each plant at least six inches apart.

Flax Ornamental Mix is also low maintenance. When fully mature, the plant simply needs to be watered from time to time, especially on hot or dry days.  flax does not require rich feed, however, overwatering encourages big sprawling plants.

Support for Vigorous Stems

Even though flax has vigorous wiry stems, windy situations do welcome the stems being given support by using small stakes close to the stems.

To extend the flowering period, remove spent flowers at regular intervals. This will encourage the plant to form more flowers. In the autumn, allow some flowers to seed if you want next year’s self-sown.

flax is not generally disease and insect-susceptible. Aphids and spider mites will show up during hot and dry conditions. Flush them out with water or insecticidal soap. Fungal disease can be avoided by maintaining good air circulation by planting in the right way.

It is easy and rewarding to raise showy flax from seed. With proper soil, spacing, and minimal care, you can enjoy its delicate multi-color blooms year after year. In either a flower border or wildflower meadow,  flax adds refinement and motion to the landscape.
