Dianthus Ideal from seed can be a rewarding experience. Here are the steps to successfully grow Dianthus from seed:
1. Dianthus Ideal Seed Selection
- Choose high-quality Dianthus seeds from a reputable supplier. There are many varieties, so select one that suits your garden’s climate and your aesthetic preferences.
2. Sowing Time
- Dianthus seeds can be sown indoors 6-8 weeks before the last frost date in your area, or directly in the garden after the last frost.
3. Starting Seeds Indoors
- Containers: Use seed trays or small pots with drainage holes.
- Soil: Use a seed-starting mix or a well-draining potting soil.
- Sowing Depth: Sow the seeds on the surface of the soil and lightly press them in, as they need light to germinate.
- Watering: Water gently to keep the soil moist but not waterlogged.
- Light: Place the containers in a location with bright, indirect light. You can use grow lights if necessary.
- Temperature: Maintain a temperature of 65-75°F (18-24°C).
4. Germination
- Seeds usually germinate in 10-21 days. Keep the soil consistently moist during this period.
5. Transplanting
- Hardening Off: Before transplanting, harden off the seedlings by gradually exposing them to outdoor conditions over a week.
- Location: Choose a sunny spot with well-draining soil in your garden.
- Planting: Space the seedlings about 6-12 inches apart, depending on the variety.
- Watering: Water thoroughly after transplanting.
6. Care
- Watering: Keep the soil consistently moist but avoid waterlogging.
- Feeding: Fertilize with a balanced, water-soluble fertilizer every 4-6 weeks.
- Deadheading: Remove spent flowers to encourage continuous blooming.
- Pests/Diseases: Watch for pests like aphids and diseases like powdery mildew, and treat as necessary.
7. Blooming
- Dianthus plants usually bloom in late spring to early summer. With proper care, they can continue to produce flowers throughout the growing season.
By following these steps, you can enjoy beautiful Dianthus blooms in your garden.

After 4 days 17 out of 20 seeds germinated. However it is to be seen how many of them will transform into a healthy sapling ready to be transplanted. In August temperature is on the higher side and during daytime very often it extends beyond 30 degree cencius, so I was anxious about whether the temperature exceeds the required for dianthus germination. However this is the result I have got. Thanks seedsnpots team for supplying high quality fresh seeds. As always I use sterile soilless coco peat based potting mix for seed germination.
