You can obtain seeds from matured canna plants or purchase them at a garden store. Seeds are little, round, and hard. If you’re using them from your own plants, let the seed pods dry on the plant initially.

Canna Red Seeds have a hard covering, and as a consequence, they need help in order to germinate. You can attempt one of the following:

a. Sow the seeds in water

b. Sow the seeds in soil

Scarification: Gently sand or sand part of the seed coat to allow for water penetration.

Soaking: Immerse seeds in warm water for 24 hours after scarification to soften seeds.

Sow treated seeds in small pots of draining medium. Sow each seed about 1/2 inch deep and cover with light medium. Water lightly but not soggy.

Canna seeds should be heat warmed to germinate. Place pots in a warm spot, 70-80°F (21-27°C). South window or heat mat. Germinating will occur within 1-2 weeks, although some take their time.

When the seedlings appear, move them to a sunny spot. Water regularly, wet but not soaked soil. After they mature, re-pot into larger pots if needed.

Seeds that are 6 inches tall in hot weather (more than 50°F or 10°C at night) are ready to be planted outside. Choose a full-sun site with loose, rich soil. Plant 12-18 inches apart.

If you keep them properly cared for, your Canna Red plants will grow tall with gorgeous red flowers. They have summer blooms and resist early frost. You may store seeds to replant the next year or let rhizomes remain in the ground (in tropical zones) for another bloom.
