Aquilegia Seeds is a small and adorable columbine that is highly desirable for its small flowers and odd leaves. Although it was traditionally grown under a temperate climate, there actually exists a possibility of growing it in India’s climatic conditions if proper care is given. It is thrilling to grow it from seed but with caution.

For proper germination, plant the seeds in season. Aquilegia Cameo seeds in India are to be planted ideally towards late autumn or early spring. Since the plant prefers cold climates, plant them during the other seasons except summer. If you are staying in northern India, October or February would be a good time to plant the seeds. In coastal and southern regions, planting the seeds in November or early January will prove useful.

Aquilegia seeds take a long to germinate naturally, and stratification, thus, adds effectiveness. To mimic their cold dormancy phase when they naturally are in that stage, place the seeds between two wet paper towels in an open plastic bag. Place the bag in the fridge for three to four weeks.

Once stratified, sow the seeds in draining soil. Sow them in a seed tray or small pots containing light potting mix with coco peat, perlite, and compost. Sow the seeds on the soil surface firmly but not buried in the soil since they require light to germinate. Water the soil but not waterlogged.

Aquilegia Cameo grows well in partial shade and also in balconies and shaded light gardens. If sown outside, select a site that gets the morning sun and afternoon shade. Sow best using the temperature range of 15–20°C, which will take two to three weeks.

Once two sets of true leaves have developed, seedlings can be planted. Space them 20–25 cm apart in large pots or beds. Plant them in well-draining soil with adequate organic matter. Water them often but not excessively, which will rot their roots, and with an even layer.

Aquilegia Cameo needs moderate watering and periodic feeding. A weak organic fertilizer every four to six weeks will promote healthy growth of the plant. Deadheading, or the removal of old flowers, will ensure continuous flowering, and pruning dead leaves will keep the plant healthy. As a perennial, it can be dormant in the hot summer but will grow again when the weather cools.
