Agave Attenuata Native to Central Mexico, this perennial succulent has a thick trunk, branching at the base and with ovate, pale-yellow leaves. These are typically 50–70cm long and lack terminal spines. Commonly known by the names Century Plant and Fox Tail Agave. The impressive flowerhead is often curved downwards, it may be up to 1.5m in length, and bears greenish-white flowers in summer. Like in many Agave species, flowers are short and funnel-shaped with 6 tepals. Owing to its large and recurved flowerhead, this species is often known as the Fox Tail or Swan’s Neck Agave in some parts of the world.
Agave Attenuata Cultivation and Propagation: It is a popular summer-growing species of relatively easy cultivation.
Growth rate: Slow-growing.
Soil: Grow it in an open standard, sandy-gritty cactus compost and provide a very good drainage.
Exposure: It is suited for sunny-brightly exposure, but can tolerate light shade. However it will do its best with lots of sun and become stressed with inadequate light which could result in poor growth and unnatural shape. It has a good heat tolerance.
Watering: Water regularly (about once a week) during the growing season and keep it completely dry during winter or when night temperatures remain below 10° C. Water it less than average if in bigger pots.
