Steps to grow Oregano Seeds
Planting Time
Start Oregano seeds indoors in September before the winter, or directly sow the herb seeds outdoors.
Planting Location
- Oregano seeds need light to germinate. Plant in a location with full sun.
- Oregano plants grow well in soil that drains well and in full sun. The plants also do not like acidic soil
Plant oregano near basil, beans, broccoli, brussels sprouts, cabbage, cauliflower, chives, cleome, eggplant, Lavender, parsley, peppers, rosemary, sage, squash, strawberries, thyme, and turnips.
Planting Oregano Seeds
- Fill seed trays or pots with slightly moistened seed starting mix.
- Gently press down the seed starting mix to remove any air pockets. Add a bit more to the trays if needed.
- Place 2-3 tiny seeds per planting cell or pot and gently press into the seed starting mix. Oregano seeds need light to germinate, so do not cover them completely.
- Spray the top of the soil with water to keep moist.
- Cover the seed tray or pot with a plastic dome.
- Once seeds germinate in 10-14 days, transplant the seedling outdoor , spacing the plants 8-12 inches apart.
Care And Maintenance
Oregano requires some additional care
- Water Regularly: Oregano does best when you allow the soil to dry slightly between waterings.
- Pinch Oregano Leaves Often: Regularly prune oregano leaves to encourage bushier growth and better flavor. To increase the yield, trim the blooms off before the flowers open to encourage more leaf growth
- Pests and Diseases: Keep an eye out for these tiny white insects and treat them with insecticidal soap if needed.
- Fertilize Only If Needed: simply add some fresh compost to the soil surface every few months.
- Try to harvest oregano leaves any time during the growing season.
- The flavor is best prior to blooming.
- Dry leaf for later use or try to use in fresh pasta, pizza, etc.
Depending on the variety, oregano can tolerate heat and even pretty cold temperatures. Oregano does best in full sun and well-drained soil. Other than that, it’s not picky about where it grows. It generally does not like high humidity and must have sharp soil drainage and good air circulation in humid climates.
